Although many dental patient’s complaints are “tooth centric” (caused by tooth problems), there are other causes of dental pain that are unrelated to the teeth. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complicated joint with multiple moving parts that, when injured, can cause pain on opening and closing motions.
These uncomfortable symptoms can stem from inflamed muscles involved with opening and closing your jaw, while others may have sustained injuries to the joint as well.
Patients with damaged joints can experience many different issues including clicking, crepidus (sound of loose particles grinding), tenderness in the soft tissue adjacent to the joint, locking of the jaw, and asymmetric movement of the jaw to the side when opening and closing.
